In the 18th revision of the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, the moisture measurement method (Karl Fischer method) has been significantly revised. Based on the premise that appropriate moisture measurement can be confirmed in conformity tests, it has become possible to flexibly use commercially available moisture measurement reagents, taking into account the solubility of samples and potential interference with the Karl Fischer reaction. Traditionally, kaolin standard solutions were used for turbidity measurement; however, due to the increasing precision of measuring devices and the need to address pathogenic microorganisms such as Cryptosporidium, measurements in low turbidity ranges, such as 0.1 NTU, are now required. The water quality standards for drinking water allow for measurements in low turbidity ranges, and polystyrene-based particle suspensions have been adopted as turbidity standard solutions with less variability between batches compared to kaolin.
